This message on the origin of COVID-19 is false. Whilst the origin of COVID-19 has not been confirmed, it is thought to have originated from the live animal ‘wet’ markets in Wuhan China. In February, the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that ‘the most likely ecological reservoirs for SARS-CoV-2 are bats’, and in April that ‘[a]ll available evidence suggests that SARS-CoV-2 has a natural animal origin and is not a constructed virus. Many researchers have been able to look at the genomic features of SARS-CoV-2 and have found that evidence does not support that SARS-CoV-2 is a laboratory construct. If it were a constructed virus, its genomic sequence would show a mix of known elements. This is not the case”.
In addition, research by Andersen et al. published in Nature concludes that “[i]t is improbable that SARS-CoV-2 emerged through laboratory manipulation of a related SARS-CoV-like coronavirus. […] the genetic data irrefutably show that SARS-CoV-2 is not derived from any previously used virus backbone. Instead, we propose two scenarios that can plausibly explain the origin of SARS-CoV-2: (i) natural selection in an animal host before zoonotic transfer; and (ii) natural selection in humans following zoonotic transfer.”
